“Campus Safety”
“The number one thing I think about when sending my child to college is her safety,” said parent Barbra West.
Mrs. West daughter is a sophomore at Eastern Michigan University who worries about her safety. She explained how she’s glad to hear from her daughter and other officials how things have changed from previous years. “I hear from my daughter every night just to check on things, and even though I’m not there with her everyday I think she will be fine,” said Mrs. West. Campus safety is the number one thing that’s not only important to parents but students and faculty members. In 2006, a college student was found dead in her dorm room which gave students at the time a scare. “Of course when I heard the news I was scared, even though I wasn’t living on campus the fact that someone was found dead in her dorm me made me question my safety” said senior Sharita Williams.
In 2007, Eastern Michigan University has made some major changes, including hiring a new president and other faculty members. They’ve also made sure that students attending school will be safe rather on or off campus. One of the major concerns that’s been seen and or talked about is tailgating. Tailgating is when students stand at the door of the dorms, school doors in able to get in when they don’t have a student ID and or key. “It seems like when I leave going to my afternoon class, someone always catches the door as I walk out and walk in,” said freshman Kendall Lewis. Students haven’t quite understood that tailgating not only outs them in danger but there fellow classmates who also live in the same dorm room as themselves.
When looking over the statistics of the many crimes committed at Eastern Michigan University it was shown that most crime happens on and or around campus. In the years of 2005-2007 numbers have shown how there has been numerous robberies, sexual assaults, and burglaries that has occurred on campus, due to the lack of campus safety. To change some of the numbers for the many years to come Eastern University has made minor changes that will continue to expand throughout the years.
Cameras have been installed by all dorm room doors, showing exactly who is entering and exiting. 7 p.m., ID’s are required when entering through the dorms. After 10 p.m., each resident in the dorms must sign in his or her visitors. “I’m an R.A. and it’s very important that I tell my fellow residents to make sure they watch there backs and just make sure they don’t let in stranger’s” said sophomore Dominique Jones. Dominique also went on to explain how important it is after 10 p.m. to check ID’s from everyone that enters and making sure that there guests are checked in and they have some kind of valid ID.
Campus safety isn’t just important to students and families but to the Ann Arbor police who protects. Everyday and every hour police officers are around campus making sure students are shown rather then told that there safety is very important. Officer Candace Dorsey explained how she herself has a child of her own and even though they aren’t in college she will be worried about there safety when they do decide to enter college.
Some other changes that have been made around campus in order to stop some of the crimes that happens on campus is making sure that students feel safe when walking back to there dorms from a late night. When searching the internet there was an article that explained that most crimes which occurs on campus happens at night. So in order to make sure one feels safe Eastern Michigan has two people who have volunteered to walk with other students at night to there destination. They were clothing so that they are seen; they have walkie talkies so that they can keep in touch with one another and help with the risk of one been followed and or hurt.
Emails are important there not just for contacting you professors and or friends but officials use emails to contact each student on campus and inform them of what crime has committed on campus and or around the area. “I honestly don’t check my emails from school; I get so many that I just ignore them even the ones from the EMU department and I leave off campus so I don’t really care,” said junior Rod Atkins, the next question is how can we get students to pay more attention to there surroundings as well. The emails sent aren’t to scare students and to annoy but just to inform them of what’s going on and if they have seen the suspect what they should do and or if they were in this situation what they should do. The emails are a way to just inform and let those know of everything that’s happening on campus so that they will just have a clue. “I actually like the idea of the emails and I really encourage my child to read them just to know rather they feel its important or not,” said freshman parent Robert Hill. Robert Hill is attending Eastern for his first year and he explains how his mom is very protective and makes sure that she calls every night just to make sure every thing is fine.
In conclusion campus safety is really important, when sending your child off to college it’s always good to know the area in which the college they will be attending and making sure that your child will feel safe. Campus safety is also very important because as a parent you’re not always going to be there to protect your child and talking to your child can also be helpful as well. College’s all over makes sure that they have many police officers, rules and conducts that are taking very seriously when the safety of a student is in jeopardy. “Since last years I have seen minor changes made at Eastern, I’m glad noticeable changes have been made and I can honestly say if my safety was questioned I wouldn’t have returned to Eastern this year,” said sophomore Krystalynn Ray.
Campus safety is something that needs to be paid more attention to, because it’s very important. In the past year or so Eastern Michigan University like many other college’s has made changes when it comes to the safety of the fellow students. In order to stop so many crimes committed on campus Eastern has made noticeable changes which were described in the paragraph above. Eastern has cut back on the tailgating which occurs with adding more camera’s, making sure students living in the dorms carry there students ID’s and have there gust who don’t attend the college signed in and checked after a certain time. Eastern is reaching out to the students by sending emails making sure they have a clue and having see us walk those who feel uncomfortable back to there dorms. Last but not least officers are always on duty to protect and serve. Campus safety is very important and that’s why parents as long as college students should take it more seriously so that they can enjoy there college years as well has feeling and being safe.
